Background of the study
Workplace safety is significantly influenced by environmental factors, particularly in industrial settings. In Sapele, industries face unique challenges related to environmental hazards such as poor ventilation, exposure to harmful substances, and inadequate safety infrastructure. These factors not only jeopardize the health and safety of employees but also affect operational efficiency and productivity (Ibe, 2023). Environmental risks in industrial workplaces can lead to accidents, injuries, and long-term health issues. Despite the existence of safety regulations, many industries in Sapele struggle to maintain safe working conditions due to limited resources and weak enforcement of standards (Adesanya, 2024). The interplay between environmental hazards and workplace safety underscores the need for comprehensive risk assessments and proactive safety measures. This study investigates how environmental factors impact workplace safety and examines strategies to improve safety protocols in industrial settings. By integrating recent research and empirical evidence, the study aims to provide recommendations that enhance occupational safety and promote a culture of preventive risk management (Oluwole, 2025).

Statement of the problem
Industries in Sapele face significant challenges in maintaining workplace safety due to adverse environmental conditions. Poor infrastructure, exposure to hazardous substances, and inadequate safety measures contribute to frequent accidents and injuries. These issues not only harm employees but also disrupt productivity and lead to financial losses. The study seeks to understand the extent to which environmental factors compromise workplace safety and to identify effective strategies for mitigating these risks. Addressing these challenges is critical for ensuring employee well-being and operational efficiency (Afolabi, 2024).

Objectives of the study:

  1. To identify key environmental hazards affecting workplace safety.
  2. To evaluate the impact of these hazards on industrial safety performance.
  3. To propose strategies for improving safety protocols.

Research questions:

  1. What environmental factors compromise workplace safety in Sapele industries?
  2. How do these factors affect employee health and productivity?
  3. What strategies can effectively mitigate environmental risks?

Research Hypotheses:

  1. Adverse environmental conditions significantly increase workplace accidents.
  2. Poor safety infrastructure correlates with lower employee productivity.
  3. Implementing robust safety measures will reduce accident rates.

Significance of the study
This study is significant as it examines the critical impact of environmental factors on workplace safety in industrial settings. Its findings will help industries in Sapele develop effective safety protocols, reducing accidents and enhancing employee well-being. The research contributes to improved occupational safety practices and overall industrial performance (Balogun, 2023).

Scope and limitations of the study:
Limited to the topic only.

Definitions of terms:

  1. Environmental factors: External physical conditions affecting the workplace.
  2. Workplace safety: Measures and protocols to protect employees from harm.
  3. Industrial settings: Work environments within manufacturing or processing industries.
